‘Sound Reasoning

Sound Horses’

Are we anti shoes ?

There is no doubt that shoeing impedes the proper function of the equine foot and can lead to a steady decline in overall foot health. However, some horses cope very well in shoes and with the help of a good farrier, can remain sound for their entire working lives. Every DAEP will tell you that in an ideal world shoeless is infinitely better for your horse but it is a big commitment for the owner

They need to have the time and facilities to provide the right environment to promote healthy feet. If this is not the case, having your horse shod by a reputable farrier may be the best thing for you. Sometimes, due to poor conformation or previous damage the horse may not have a good enough foot to achieve the performance required by the owner

Shoeing can provide the foot with the support it needs for instant high performance as long as the owner realises that this will compromise proper foot function. Shoes can also be beneficial on a temporary basis as part of a transition programme moving towards going shoeless

As my mentor, K C La Pierre says:

‘’Shoeing is not the necessary evil

It’s the lack of knowledge

that makes shoeing a necessity

that is the true evil’’
